December 10, 2005 CHEEKWOOD Festival of the Holidays

Queen Cleopurrrtra planned our December Outing which took us to Cheekwood, a historic mansion high on a hill in Belle Meade.  Although Cheekwood opened to the public in 1960, it was a first time visit for most of us.  This estate (55 acre, 30,000 sq. ft. Georgian-style mansion and formal gardens) was once home to Leslie and Mabel Creek and their two children.   (Mr. Creek made his fortune by investing in Maxwell House coffee).  We began our day at the Pineapple Room Restaurant (of course – food first for our hungry Kats and Kittens) where our dining tables overlooked Cheekwood’s lush lawns.  Queen Cleopurrrtra welcomed three new Kats and Kittens to our humble litter today; Lady Glitter of the Litter (Sue), Madame Bayou (Terry) and Princess ApriKat (Barbara).  Also in attendance today were  Queen of De’Nile (Faye), Kountess Katnip (Samantha), Sassy Kat Woman (Shawn), Princess Pink Panther (Brenda), Lady Felina (Vivian), Catpurrrnium (Debbie A.), Dutchess Aristikat (Amy), Madame GiGi (Gail), Lady Siamese Kat (Debbie L.), Lady SophistaKat (Tracey), Baroness Von Meow (Linda), and Princess Miss Kitty, (Miss Kitty was sickly and could not attend – NOT).

We gave a big MEOW to our Birthday Kitties, Catpurrnium, Baroness Von Meow, Madame GiGi and Madame Bayou.  This year let’s try something different for Birthdays.  We have a big Red Hat Basket full of wrapped gifts.  On your birthday, you can choose a gift from the basket.  In order to keep the basket full, you can bring an inexpensive wrapped gift ($2) to the next outing.   It doesn’t need to be red hat items – just something in our signature colors.

After a relaxing gourmet lunch, we exchanged gifts and headed to the Mansion to enjoy Festival of the Holidays.  A beautiful Christmas tree and papier-mache carolers adorned the entrance. A grand staircase took us to the Loggia Level where we eyed collections of Worchester Porcelain, a Silver Library and the Cheek Dining Room with many of the home’s original furnishings.  Festive holiday decorations highlighted by fabulous towering themed trees bejeweled each room.  The third floor housed the museum’s renowned collection of American Art with special exhibits from other institutions around the world.  Being the refined ladies that we are – we totally appreciate the works of art and found it to be a luxurious experience which electrified our senses!!!  NOT.  We visited the gift shops and several Kitties took home very unique treasures.

Queen Cleo brought each Kat/Kitten a handmade 2005 Red/Pink Hat ornament and a red/pink shawl or gloves.   What a fun day with our Red Hat Fristers (friends/sisters)!!!!
