Jesse Stroud

Notes from Bob Wilson:

Candidates for Jesse Stroud's parents:
1. William Stroud and Elizabeth Buckner married in Caroline Co., VA in1750. Elizabeth had a brother named Jesse, so their parentage wouldexplain the names of both Jesse Stroud and his son William BucknerStroud. Unfortunately, no information has been found about the pair'schildren, nor about William's parentage.

2. Elizabeth and Joshua Stroud of Marlboro Co., SC had a son named JessieStroud in 1778. Jesse Stroud appears in the Union Co., SC census in 1800with a wife and children in the household. However, a Jesse Stroud, bornin SC in 1778, died in Williamson Co., IL in 1849. This is believed tobe the son of Elizabeth and Joshua. Since we do not know the place andtime of death of William Buckner Stroud's father, we do not know whetherour Jesse could also be the SC-IL Jesse.

3. John Stroud of VA had a son named Jesse, as mentioned in JeanDennison's book. However, she believed this John to be the son ofWilliam, son of John. Rick Saunders' discussion of why this is unlikelyfollows:

I will start with my ancestor John Stroud who died in Mecklenburg Co., VAin 1776. In his will he named his sister-in-law Christina Hatchell andbrother-in-law William Hatchell. This John Stroud is first foundmentioned in Isle of Wight Co., VA records in 1759. In 1762 he witnessedthe will of John Batten, and in 1763 he was an appraiser of the estate ofHardy Westray. His wife was Sarah Morris, daughter of John Morris andwife Mary. Charles Parish, York Co., VA records show her birth as 17Sep. 1728.

It is uncertain whether they married in York Co., VA, and accompanied herfather from York Co., VA to Isle of Wight Co., VA, or he was already inI. of W., and they married after the Morris family moved there. Becauseof the lack of Stroud in I. of W., and similar names in York County,(Joseph, William), I believe he was also probably from York County, andthey married there before the move.

John Morris wrote his will 1772 in Isle of Wight Co., VA and probated in1772. He named among others his daughter Sarah Stroud, and daughterChristina Hatchell, providing proof of the connection to the names inJohn Stroud's 1776 Mecklenburg County will, where he named hissister-in-law Christina Hatchell. Sarah apparently died between herfather's 1772 will, and her husband's 1776 will.

That fact alone that John Stroud of Mecklenburg was probably from YorkCounty, and definitely living in Isle of Wight County in the 1750s,1760s, would indicate he is probably not closely related to the JohnStroud and his son William Stroud's descendants that had been in theBrunswick/Lunenburg area from the early 1700s. This John had probablyjust moved to Mecklenburg County shortly before he wrote his will in 1776

I notice she tries to make the elder John Stroud of her genealogy have awife Martha, based on her footnote 3 on page 100, where John Stroud had awife named Martha in 1756. The elder John Stroud was deceased ca. 1737in Prince George's Co., VA, when his widow Hannah administered hisestate. I have not studied this closely, as it is not my line, but Ibelieve there is some thought she was a second wife.

The John Stroud that she lists above with wife Martha is a grandson ofthe original John, and son of William. John with wife Martha firstappears in NC/VA records about 1751 until about 1784 at which time hemoved to Wilkes Co., GA. His widow Martha wrote her will there in1816. William had a son John born 29 Nov. 1726. As John with wifeMartha appears in the same area as his father by 1751, I have no doubtthat this John with wife Martha is the son of William.

Remember that John of the 1776 Mecklenburg Co., will was in Isle of WightCo., VA at this time in the 1750s, and I do not see him being the son ofWilliam.

As to your next question, is Jesse, son of John of the 1776 MecklenburgCo., will identical to Jesse in Burke Co., NC and later TN:

I have no information on Jesse Stroud, other than his mention in JohnStroud's will. The same for his sons John and Edward. One would be thefather of my Archibald Stroud, and died ca. 1784, most likely John.

Other than that they have the same name, I have nothing to connect thetwo Jesse's. On the other hand I can't say that it is not him either.
