Lemuel Riddick

lived on "Sweet Retreat" 2 miles from his father. Was vestry member forNansemond Co., VA

Note: He was from Ireland. Settled in Nansemond Co., VA where he was a vestryman for 40 years.

The town of Suffolk, Virginia was incorporated in 1742 on the south bank of the Nansemond River in the County of Nansemond. Suffolk was officially designated a port of entry on July 31, 1789. According to a census taken by Benjamin Riddick in 1850, there were 1,200 people living in the town of Suffolk. By 1860, as the Civil War approached, the population of Suffolk had increased to 1, 390. Benjamin Riddick had been elected Mayor in 1858, and was still serving Suffolk in that capacity when the War began. On May 12, 1862, the New York Cavalry rode into town and forced Mayor Riddick to surrender local control.

Benjamin Franklin Riddick moved to Haywood County, Tennessee in 1838.

Lemuels pop up everywhere in what was Nansemond Co.,VA and Gates Co.,NC. The one in my direct line (1690-1776)was the son of James Riddick b.1650 and Anne Polke-Burgess, and was the uncle of Mills Riddick.
He was an Anglican minister and was in the VA House of Burgesses beginning 1736. The 11-3-1750 deed was for 267 acres on the W. side of the Blackwater river adjoining land owned by Thomas Lawrence & John Daughtrey. The tract may have been called "Sweet Retreat". The Sarah R. you refer to is probably the dau James Riddick and Sarah Parker. She was the above Lemuel's granddaughter. Christopher(1738-1798) was the son of Mills I and half bro of Mills II ("Horse Pool")and grandson of Josiah (1689-1765, of "Old Place.)They had sons William,Mills, Henry & James

My paternal Grandmother was Ida Mae Riddick Hobbs. According to the recently published Riddick Family tree (published by my Aunt); Lemuel Riddick I was born in Ireland in 1611 and died there in 1675. His son Lemuel II was born in Ireland in 1633 and died in Nansemond County, Va in 1711. The next Lemuel Riddick I am able to locate in the family tree is shown below. This book shows all the anscestory from Captain Joseph Riddick and beyond. Below are the Lemuel Riddick's that I have found around this time frame.

Lemuel Riddick I (1611-1675)
|->Lemuel Riddick II (1663-1711)
|->Captain Joseph Riddick (1689-1759)
|->General Joseph Riddick (1735-1818)
|->Sarah "Sallie" Riddick (?) married Christopher Riddick (no anscestor info)
|->Lemeul Riddick (c1794-?)

As you see, the dates for these three Lemuel Riddick's don't line up with the time frame for the active revolutionist in the 1770's. Although the last Lemuel Riddick listed above shows a Circa date as it is not known for sure.

I recently began reading Charles Royster's book, The Fabulous History of the Dismal Swamp Company. There are three Riddicks named in this book: Mills, Henry, and Lemuel. In August 1764, The Dismal Swamp company rented a plantation owned by Mills Riddick; 402 acres six miles from Suffolk; later to become known as the Dismal Plantation. Later in the summer of 1766, after Mills Riddicks' death, the company purchased the property from Mills' son. In 1775, a few days after George Washington was chosen as the Commander in Chief of the continnental army, Henry Riddick was employed by the partners to "superintend the company's affairs in the swamp". Henry owned land adjoining the Dismal Plantation. And, it states that Lemuel Riddick was the owner of Paradise Plantation, 600 acres which adjoined the Dismal Plantation. In 1799, The Dismal Swamp Company purchased the land from Lemuel Riddick for $3,000. According to descriptions in the book, the Jericho Ditch runs through this property.

The thing that drew my attention to the Lemuel Riddick that was was Sarah "Sallie" Riddicks' son is that he had a brother named Henry and one named Mills. It seemed logical to me that the three brothers would own land adjoining each other.

I live on the western boarder of the dismal swamp just inside of NC and am interested in finding a plat of the property. Just tonight I found a deed issued to Lemuel Riddick on 11-3-1750 although all I know at this point is that it is for property in "Nansemond County on the west side...".

He was killed by a falling tree in a storm as he chased his daughter that had eloped with her tutor, JAMES RIDDICK. Upon his death, the couple inherited the family home "WHITE MARSH".
