MILITARY SERVICE
5TH MISSISSIPPI INFANTRY STATE TROOPS
The 5th Mississippi Infantry State Troops was organized for six months late in 1862. It had 1,385 men in it, many over the age limit of 35, that had been set up at that time. Believed to have been organized to help defend the State and Vicksburg, under Colonel Henry T. Robinson. At Vicksburg the State Troops or Minute Men, as they were called, were assigned under Brigadere General Jeptha V. Harris, in the 2nd Brigade. The 2nd Brigade was under Major General Martin Luther Smith's Division in the army of Lieutenant General John C. Pemberton. Zachariah Williams Irby was a Private in Company D, 5th Miss. Inf. State Troops.

Sarah C. (Martin) Mott

SAW gave her name as Martin. Judy Patrick believes that she was a Mott, not a Martin. Her mother, Eleanor Chapman, married Silas M. Mott. After he died, she married Norman Martin. Census records support this.

1850 Census, Clarke Co, Mississippi
106-106 Norman MARTIN 52 M Farmer 1000 N. C. (mwy)

Martha E. Irby

SAW called her Mary Ellen, Judy Patrick says Martha E.

Mary (Polly) Tune

[I think William may have been married only once and that "Coley" could be a misreading of "Polly" on the census.]

John Saunders Irby

No record.

From Judy Patrick:
I have found a JOHN IRBY with wife ELIZABETH in Rutherford County, Tennessee that I THINK might be JOHN SAUNDERS IRBY, born 1816.
1860 RUTHERFOR CO., TENNESSEE CENSUS:
JOHN IRBY, age 45
ELIZABETH, age 38
SAMPSON IRBY, age 17 (I'm thinking Elizabeth could be Elizabeth Sampson, daughter of Catherine Irby and Samuel Sampson).

HARRIET IRBY, age 11
CALVIN IRBY, age 9
ROBERT IRBY, age 7
JAMES IRBY, age 5

John Stewart Irby

He was a soldier from Halifax Co. in the war of 1812, and received a pension at Enterprise P.O. in Clarke Co Miss. (S.A. 26048/S.C. 16533 in Oct 1871)
The members of this Irby family settled in the north east section of Clarke Co., and the south east section of Lauderdale Co., both in Mississippi.
John Irby and his wife and four children left Halifax Co. Va. about 1825 and were in Georgia for about 7 years and in Alabama; and arrived in Mississippi in 1849. John bought his first land on Nov. 14, 1849 in Lauderdale County, 2 miles south of Increase and on the Clarke Co. border.. They were living in Beat 4, of Clarke County east of New Bethel Church when the 1850 census was taken. They were also living there when the 1860 census was taken.
There were other Irby families in this section of Miss. besides the John Stewart Irby families. Also Ivy families.

[map]
It is easy to locate families in states that are sectioned lined. For instance, as in this case in Clarke Co., Miss, the land purchased by the Irbys shortly after they arrived, could be plotted in a short time, and then by following the roads on the map it was an easy matter to be in the section where they lived.

[Judy Patrick's notes]
John Stewart Irby was drafted into the Military in Halifax County, Virginia. He applied for his military pension in Energy, Clarke County, Mississippi. He received a Bounty Land Warrant for 200 Acres of land in Clarke County, Mississippi.
In addition he purchased the following:
Patentee: John S. Irby, Land Office: Augusta; Document Number: 7990; Title Authority: Cash Entry Sale; Signature: Y; Signature Date: 1849/12/01; Land Description Number: 1; Aliquot Parts: NWNE; Section Number: 33, Image Name: 00014705; Volume ID: 541; Township: 5N; Range: 17E; Base Line: Choctaw; Total Acres: 40.0300
Patentee: John S. Irby, Land Office: Augusta; Document Number: 7989; Title Authority: Cash Entry Sale; Signature: Y; Signature Date: 1849/12/01; Land Description: 1; Aliquot Parts: NWNW; Section Number: 8: Image Name: 00014704; Volume ID: 541; Township: 4N; Range: 17E; Base Line: Choctaw; Total Acres: 39.9100
NOTE: John S. Irby sold the above land parcel, Document Number: 7989, (39.9100 Acres) to John Williams on April 13, 1860.
John Stewart Irby served in the War of 1812. His tombstone was recently replaced by the VA. He was enlisted in the 7th Regiment, Perkins Battalion, Mississippi Militia. The inscription on his tombstone reads: PVT4, Regiment 2 BN, VA Militia, War of 1812, July 14, 1794 - December 1, 1878.
1850 Clarke County Mississippi Census:
John Irby, age 57, male, farmer, $1,500, born in Virginia. Martha Irby, age 55, female, born in Virginia, James Irby, age 21, male, farmer, born in Georgia (married within the year), Peyton Irby, age 17, male, farmer, born in Georgia and still in school.
Note: His name is "Dock" Peyton Harry White Irby.

Virginia Irby

No record.

Jane Weakley Irby

Living July 11, 1845

Nancy T. Adams

No record.

George Adams

No record.

Is it possible that GILES & GEORGE ADAMS are the SAME PERSON?
I had taken these notes a long time back and just ran across them:
GILES (JILES) ADAMS, son of JANE WEAKLEY IRBY & MEADE ADAMS, born 1826 in Halifax County, died 1908 in Trezevant, Carroll County, Tennessee. GILES (JILES) married ARMON E. FUQUA, born June 12, 1833, died 1888 in Trezevant, Carroll County, Tennessee. Her father was JOSPEH FUQUA and her mother was MARY P. NEAL.
Either GEORGE & GILES are twins, both born 1826 and they both married ARMON E. FUQUA, OR.......they are one and the same person.
I know it is very common for one spouse to marry the sibling of another spouse as a second marriage, but I just thought it was something to consider.

Judy Patrick

Giles Adams

Luther Anderson Irby (section D 2-10-1) remembers George and Giles Adams.

I didn't find a George Adams....I did find Giles in the TN. census 1860 , Carroll Co. and Dickson Co. and Hamilton.
The Family Snich has Him listed married to Armon E. Fuqua....One of their children is George W.
Pat Cash

Elizabeth Crawley Irby

Living July 11, 1845.

John McGregor

"On March 25, 1820 and May 19, 1821 John McGregor purchased a total of155 acres of the Fambrough tract, including the headwaters of the Fambrough Spring Branch. John McGregor marries on September 28, 1829 to Mary Ridley Irby, and daughter of Samuel and Nancy Irby, and granddaughter of John and Jean Stewart. "

The family Bible says 10/22/1830 but County Marriage Book gives the earlier marriage date. John married a second time after Mary, to Elizabeth A., date and surname not given.

SAW adds to this record, "John Sr., John Jr., William and Daniel McGregor are mentioned many times in the records of Halifax County. Land on Bradley Creek was mentioned. In 1838 John and Mary were living on Bye Creek.

"John McGregor and his second wife, and 4 children by his first wife and 2 children by his second wife were living in the Scottsburg section at time of 1860 census of Halifax County."

SAW did not follow the D.2. - Stewart/Irby line after this fourth generation. There are no further listings.
