Artemisia Cato Williams

[Judy Irby Patrick]
Zachariah Williams Irby m.
1. Artemisia Cato Williams(1875 - 1937). She is buried at the River Hill Cemetery near Salipta, Alabama where she lived and died. Her second husband was Charles Gordon Carter with whom she had 8 more children, (half brothers and sisters to my Grandfather).
The children of Zachariah William Irby, Jr. and Artemisia Cato Williams (Irby) were Leon William Irby (8-12-1891) and Reuben Irby (after 1891). Leon William Irby was my Grandfather. Reuben died in infancy.
2. Mary Ella (Ellen) Hicks with whom they had the following:
Milton (1903) and ? Ertel, Corinne (1906) and George Rogers, Marie (1908) and Guy Andrews, Mildred (1910) and James Williamson Busey, Harold (1912) and 1. Betty Roth 2. Gloria Hupt, Newburn (Clay) -1920. He was still living in Satsuma, Ala. as of a year and a half ago. Zachariah Wm. Irby, Jr. left Mary Ella (Ellen) Hicks in 1926 and did not marry a third time.
Zachariah William Irby, married to Sarah C. Martin, is buried at the Martin Cemetery, Energy, Clarke County, Miss. He was born 1822 in Halifax Co., Va. and died in Energy, Miss. in 1905.
Zachariah William Irby, Jr. is buried at the Pine Crest Cemetery in Mobile, Alabama. He died December 15, 1952. He was born March 26, 1870.
I keep in contact with descendants of James S. Paul Irby and
"Dock" Peyton Harry White Irby, as well as those from Samuel Morgan Irby and Elizabeth Ann Gilbert Irby, as well as those
from Mastin Irby (from Peter). We are all in agreement on this one.

My GGrandmother, Artemisia Cato Williams IRBY Carter came from a very famous southern family. She is the GGranddaughter of Colonel John "Jack" Johnston, lawyer, Indian Agent, author of the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek,
beloved by the Indians, he took the Indians from Alabama and Mississippi to Oklahoma Indian Territory. The Colonel's son, with his second wife, Mary Cheadle, (first wife being Jane Bettis and Artemisia's GGrandmother), was named Douglas Hancock Cooper Johnston. Mary Cheadle was 1/2 Chickasaw Indian and their son, Douglas Hancock Cooper Johnston was the Governor of the Chickasaw Nation in Oklahoma Indian Territory. I have a photo of his oil painting that hangs in the Oklahoma Archives. I have a photo of the Colonel's grave, the only one in an Indian Cemetery. I have a HUGE JOHNSTON FTM! The daughter of Mary Cheadle and Elisha Walker, brother of the famous Choctaw Indian Chief, Tandy Walker, married Bill Murray, Governor of the State of Oklahoma. Artemisia Cato Williams IRBY Carter's sister, Sophronia "Fronie" Williams, was the second wife of JOHN FRANKLIN GRANADE. Frankville, Washington County, Alabama, was named after this man. I have a photo of them together. I have photos of nearly every sibling and child in this family. I also have documents (finally) that prove that Artemisia was the first wife of Zachariah Williams Irby, Jr.
Johnston (legal) land transactions that were drawn up through the Alabama court system and were signed by her in her name, A. C. Irby, Artemisia Cato Irby up until 1900. This is when she became Mrs. Carter. One of the documents has her mother's signature and all her siblings signatures on it with their married names.
I have letters she wrote to my Grandparents. I have a photo of her STILL LIVING daughter, Irene Eloise Morgan Morgan Pugatch. She was visited by my cousin in July. She is 90 years young! I have confirmation from all sorts of relatives that Artemisia and Zachariah were married and other side information that is so nice to have. The date of her birth and death is on her gravestone. She was born in the Bucatunna/Frost Bridge area of Mississippi and died in Salitpa, Alabama in her home. She died at age 62 of congestive heart failure. My father died in 1991 of congestive heart failure at age 63. I believe I sent you a photo of her. She has her hair cut very short due to her illness and is very near death in the photo.
