The suburban facility is known far and wide for its unique partial roof, which covers fans
from inclement weather, but leaves the game outdoors – as those familiar with Texas Stadium can
attest to after seeing the snowy Thanksgiving game with the mindboggling ending against the Dolphins
in 1993. Including the hole in the roof, the facility was completed at a cost of $35 million in 1971.
Its Stadium Club is one of the Dallas area's foremost settings for private parties, banquets and convention gatherings.
Dallas Cowboys New Stadium is the working title of a new retractable-roof stadium being built in Arlington,
Texas for the National Football League's Dallas Cowboys. It will replace the hypaethral (roofless center)
Texas Stadium, which opened in 1971, as the Cowboys’ home. It is scheduled to open before the 2009 NFL season
and will accommodate 80,000, with the possibility for expansion to accommodate 100,000.
Originally estimated to cost $650 million, the stadium's current construction cost is in excess of $1 billion,
which would make it one of the most expensive sports venues ever built. Excavation work at the stadium
site began in May 2006 near Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. Until it opens, the Cowboys will
continue to play in Texas Stadium.
